About Offizin Watson

Offizin [ɔfiˈtsiːn] - Production room of an artisan workshop

The Mission

Boots have a lot to endure in Berlin: freezing nights, rainy days, the long distances of a big city, and the critical glances of a fashion-savvy crowd on the street.
So they need to be both durable and stylish, a combination usually reserved for boots in the luxury segment.
Offizin Watson pursues an organic, lean business approach, without the heavy marketing invest that drives prices up. That's how we're able to offer handmade, Goodyear-welted boots crafted in Italy from German box calf leather at a price that reflects the quality, and nothing beyond it.

The Story

"Offizin Watson grew out of a fruitless search for a combat boot that would live up to my standards: fashionable, but not loud. Tough, but not clunky. Versatile enough for everyday wear and confident enough to stand out.
During my search, I mostly came across two extremes: cheaply made shoes that barely survive their first winter, or overdesigned boots with zippers, tractor-tire soles, or weird leather combinations. What was missing was the happy medium.
Offizin Watson was born when I stopped searching, took matters into my own hands, and designed my own shoe – in Berlin, driven by the goal of making the boot I could never find myself."
— Valerian, Founder of Offizin Watson

The Design Philosophy

At its core, our approach is to take what already exists, combine it, and enrich it with our own ideas and standards of quality to create something new. We want to stand out without being loud.
Our combat boot is based on the silhouette of 1960s US military boots, draws on traditional Pacific Northwest work boots for its sole and heel, and borrows the elegance of European dress shoes when it comes to the finish and the cut of the upper.
Every line, every seam, the build of the sole, and the cut of the leather quarters serve both a stylistic and a functional purpose:

  • The heel is deliberately high, to make larger feet look a little shorter and to give shorter wearers a bit of extra lift.
  • The outsole strikes the perfect balance between form and function. It is an ultra-tough Vibram sole with a logger-style tread, built to get you through the slipperiest winters. At the same time, the tread isn't visible from the side, deliberately avoiding a tractor-tire look.
  • The cuts and seams are intentionally designed so that the boot is made from just a few large pieces of leather. This makes the production process more demanding, but the result expresses confident style and timelessness.
  • The shaft is tall enough that you can comfortably sit with your legs crossed or wear cropped pants without your sock or leg showing.

At the same time, nothing is added that doesn't serve a purpose. We like to keep a refined restraint, and still stand out with confidence.
